What is on the Speaking Section of the iBT TOEFL

There are 6 tasks: 2 independent tasks and 4 tasks based on Reading and Listening material.

For the Speaking section, there will be text and audio. The directions for the Speaking section will be audio only. You will respond to questions orally. You will listen, the question will be asked, and then you will respond by speaking. You can take notes. You will have 15 to 30 seconds to prepare response and 45 seconds to speak. You can pause the audio.

There are two independent tasks about familiar topics. For example,

  1. "Describe a class you have taken and why it was important to you. Include details and examples."
  2. “Some people think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it is always better to have a teacher. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons to develop your essay.”

There are two tasks based on Reading and Listening material. You will read a short passage and then listen to a short lecture or conversation. You will need to combine information from both the reading and listening material in your response. You can take notes and use them to respond. For example,

  • Reading material: The first half of the twentieth century ushered in many drastic changes. Some of the most far-reaching changes have been brought about by one invention, the automobile. The increased availability of gasoline- powered cars has affected all aspects of society, all over the world........

  • Listening Material: You will hear a short lecture based on the topic above.

Question: Discuss how the automobile has affected different aspects of society, based on the previous reading and listening material.

There are two tasks based on Listening material only, including a short lecture or conversation. One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is pbased on academic classroom material. You can take notes and use them to respond.

You will have 6 speaking tasks altogether. We can help you prepare for the speaking section of the test.
